Set amongst a grove of silver birch trees in West Princes Street Gardens, this small modest stone is a memorial to Robert Louis Stevenson one of Scotland's best known and best loved writers.

Famous the all over the world for his literary classics such as Kidnapped, Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Stevenson's memorial is dwarfed by the collosal Scott Monument just yards away.

The stone is engraved with the simple words
"RLS - A MAN OF LETTERS 1850 - 1894.

The memorial was commissioned by The Stevenson Society in 1987 and scuplted by Ian Hamilton Finlay.

Stevenson stated in his letters that he didn't want a statue of himself and so this modest stone is appropriate to a modest man.

Stevenson died in Samoa in 1894.
