Originally this area was a hollow boggy marshland, kept wet by the rain and underground streams flowing from the hill side.
The loch as it is today was formed in 1856 as part of Prince Albert's plans to beautify the park surrounding the Royal Palace.
The site attracts many visitors and also a large number of many swans, ducks and geese.
