GOLFER'S
LAND
A
wall plaque on a modern Cannongate building commemorates the previous
address, a tenement, built in the 17th century.
This place was owned by a shoemaker, John Paterson who was also an accomplished
golfer.
He was chosen by the Duke of York (later James VII) to partner him in
a foursome to be played on the links nearby at Leith.
The two won the match and Paterson, who had contributed substantially
more to the victory, was well rewarded and able to fincance the contruction
of his new home, known as Golfers Land.
Abronze coat of arms above the plaque was copied from a stone set in the
first building.
