BRYRE'S CLOSE

Dating from the early sixteenth century and originally known as Malcolme's Close and Lauder's Close, this close takes its name from John Byres, a wealthy merchant who lived between 1569 and 1629.

During his lifetime, Byres was variously a magistrate, City Treasurer, and Old Provost, and upon his death the property was inherited by his son, Sir John Byres of Coats.

The house of Adam Bothwell, the Commendator of Holyrood until 1593, is sited in this close but can only be viewed from Advocate's Close.

Not open to the public.
