The Cartsheds were built immediately after the Jacobite uprising. They
were originally used to house up to fifty carts for transporting provisions
to the garrisons from suppliers in the town.
In
1988-9 an archaeological dig dicovered the foundations of the 17th century
Storekeeper's house which was demolished to build the Cartshed as well
as a range of bronze age artefacts dating from around 900 BC.
