PORTCULLIS GATE (1574-77)
This gate is was constructed after the Lang Seige of 1571 -1573 ordered
by James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton and Regent of Scotland.
Built
on the ruined 14th Century Constable's Tower, the Portcullis gate acted
as a formidible obsticle to any would-be attackers. It has two heavy outer
doors, the portcullis itself and another heavy inner door.
